Sipajhar Handloom Cluster, Darrang, Assam
The Sipajhar Handloom cluster falls in the Sipajhar Block under the Darrang district of Assam and it is at a distance of 18 km from the Mangaldai town towards the western direction and 60 km from Guwahati. The cluster villages are located at a distance of 3 kms from the Sipajhar town and all the villages are within a radius of 2-3 kms.
Total population of the cluster is 8,290 (approx.) out of which about 2000 Nos of artisans are engaged in weaving related activities. The main products of the cluster are Gamosa, Masraj Chadar Mekhela, Cotton Mekhela Chadar, Nuni Pat Mekhela Chadar, Hanky etc. Nearly six hundred (600) household units are working in the cluster.
Thr prictice of Nuni work (Mulberry Silk) is unique to one of the cluster village namely Nayakpara. The Nath Community there is practicing this work since old days. Almost every household of this community plant the Meskuri Tree (the leaves of which are used to feed the Nuni Polu) in large numbers. The Nuni yarn is used by them for making mekhela chadar (traditional assamese wear) and the products made out of these Nuni yarn are getting a good response from the Assamese society. The cluster is going to become a hub of nuni pat mekhela chador in near future.
