Cashew Nut Processing Cluster, Selsela Block, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya
Cashew nut production is very significant in West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills and cashew nut from Garo Hills , Meghalaya attracted by various tourists coming to Meghalaya and Districts of Lower Assam. Under West Garo Hills in Selsella block, which is 55 Km away from Tura District Head Quarter, a good number of farmers has been producing raw cashew nut since a long time. Around forty to fifty percent of the farmers in various villages of Selsella Block, are having three to five bighas of land with cashew nut plantation. In a village having seventy families, out of them thirty to thirty five families are having cashew nut cultivation. Mostly they sold their raw products through middlemen for the factories located at Manchaar, Pulbari, Rajabala.
Having understood the socio economic condition of the cashew nut cultivators in West Garo Hills District, not improving due to selling raw cashew nut instead of processing the same, Regional Resource Center (RRC), IIE had very recently started working on how to encourage farmers to get more income through value addition programmes. In this direction RRC has very recently initiated soft intervention activities under DC-MSME Cluster Development Programme (CDP) at Cashew Nut Processing Cluster, Selsella Block. For effective implementation of the cluster activities initially 5 villages namely Baklagre, Babetpara, Dodoretgre, khalpara, Gutlibari were taken up covering 314 household of cashew nut growers.
