ONGC-NSTFDC "Hathkarga Prashikshan Project"
An initiative for tribal artisans of Assam
An initiative for skill development for handloom and weaving was taken up by IIE in Assam under the sponsorship of ONGC and in partnership with National Schedule Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) at four pockets of Jorhat - Sodial Gaon Titabor, Golaghat – Chandmari Golaghat, Sivasagar – Ligiribari, Disangmukh & Majuli – Jengraimukh, Upper Majuli. The custom made programme imparted skill training to a total of 100 ST persons on advanced looms and enabled the weavers to produce market driven products like curtains, stoles, cushion covers and mekhalas etc.
The programme was designed not only to provide skill training but also to look after the following:
- Design inputs
- Credit linkage
- Market linkage
At the pre training stage itself, a skill assessment of the trainees was made and based on the skill needs, interventions for further up-skilling and design were decided. During the training stage, designers were attached with each programme and this helped in developing value added and market driven products like curtains, cushion cover, table mat, tea – coaster, cotton and silk stoles, mekhla chadar etc. As far as credit linkage is concerned for each pocket 2 SHG’s were formed covering all the trainees. The handholdings of the SHG’s were not only done for opening and maintaining bank accounts but also to get credit linkage. All the SHG’s got credit support through Assam Gramin Vikash Bank.
The trainees were given market exposure by enabling them to participate in exhibitions and buyer seller meets. Registration with TRIFED was facilitated and this has been a great help for the artisans. TRIFED is not only buying their products but through TRIFED the artisans are continuously getting opportunities for participation in exhibitions held in various parts of the country.
